When you think of skincare, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For most, skincare is all about facials, since your face is the part of your body that you show the world every day. But our skin covers our entire body, and a great skincare routine includes more than just professional facials. It’s about body care that keeps your skin feeling soft and looking great – all over
Why is skincare so important?
Our skin is actually an organ, and it’s the largest organ in our body. Its main function is to protect the rest of your body by forming a barrier to keep out pollutants, bacteria and other microorganisms, and even radiation from the sun. Just like all the other organs in our body, we need to keep the skin healthy so it can do its job and do it well. But unlike other organs that are inside the body, it’s important to most of us that our skin looks great, too. So, with our skin, we have two goals: to make it look (and feel) good and to keep it healthy. Those are the goals of skincare, whether it’s for your face or your body.
What makes skincare processes work?
To understand how skincare works, you first need to understand the skin itself. Like everything else in our body, it’s made up of cells, and those cells are always in a regenerative cycle where new skin cells are formed to replace old ones that die off. When we’re children, our skin always looks great because it’s constantly renewing itself and the process works well. But as we age – and this can start as early as our 20s – our skin starts to slow down a bit. Cells continue to die off at the same rate as before, because they were only built to last for a while. But issues can come up when the new cells don’t regenerate as fast as they used to, and the protein structures like collagen that support them also can’t keep up. Over time, that leaves gaps that aren’t filled in with new cells and new collagen proteins, and eventually the result is lines and wrinkles – those visible signs of aging.
The goal of skincare is to keep the skin healthy and hydrated while stimulating those rejuvenation processes so they can’t slow down. When we cleanse, exfoliate, extract, tone, and hydrate, we’re resurfacing the skin to get rid of those dead skin cells to signal the body to replace them, all while keeping it healthy with vital nutrients and moisturizing products. We’re all familiar with those steps for professional facials, but some of those same steps are important for caring for skin on the other parts of our bodies as well.
