Face Mask-Friendly Hairstyles

Face masks are everywhere now, and while they’re a must to help slow the spread of COVID-19, they may present a challenge for your regular beauty routine, particularly for your makeup and hairstyle. If your normal hairstyle gets in the way of your mask, there are plenty of different styles to try as we all adapt to this new normal.

For Long Hair:

Some long, flowing hairstyles can make mask wearing a hassle. But there are plenty of options to change up your style and wear your face mask comfortably.

Tie it back. If your first impulse is to just pull all your hair up away from your face, you’re not alone. In fact, this can be one of the best ways to wear your long hair with a face mask, and you can add a touch of your own style by doing it with colorful hair ties and clips that match your outfit – and even your mask. The best ponytail for mask wearing is up high, so it’s completely out of the way of your ear loops.

Tie it up. An updo is another great option for long hair. You can really make this one your own because there are so many different types of updos, from simple twists to braided knots, and your updo style can range from a messy bun to a sleek, slicked-back style. And if you prefer masks that tie behind your head instead of looping over your ears, a double-bun is the perfect option, because you can tie your mask right between

the top and bottom bun. If you do use ear loops, some women even use a low, well-secured bun as a place to attach their face masks.

Try a partial tie-back. If you prefer to let your locks flow down your back, you don’t have to give up your style to wear a face mask. Instead, tuck the front layers that normally frame your face around the back of your neck and secure them with a hair tie or strong clip. This creates a sort of hidden ponytail under the rest of your hair, letting it flow naturally while getting some hair away from your mask’s ear loops.

For Short Hair:

Having short hair doesn’t mean that wearing your face mask isn’t a challenge. Unless you have a super-short pixie cut or similar style, your hair is likely to get in the way of your face mask ear loops. Here are some options you can try to make it easier to wear your mask.

Slick it back. Now is a great time to get out the styling gel and spray to create a smooth, slicked-back look that’s sophisticated and stylish – and that stays out of the way of your face mask. Be sure to ask your Studio Hair stylist to recommend the best professional styling products for your hair type, to keep it healthy looking while you create that perfect style.

Accessorize it. Get creative with accessories and you’ll be sure to find a combination that works for you. Try some color-coordinated headbands, clips, or combs to tie back the sides and create a fun style that really reflects your personality.

For Thick Hair:

If you have long, thick hair, it may be harder to pull off some of the tied-back or updo styles that are so easy or others to do, especially if you have lots of layers.

Try a new cut. Sometimes it’s the type of cut that makes it more difficult to pull off a pulled-back style, so ask your Studio Hair stylists for some ideas for a cut that will make it more comfortable to wear your mask. Regular haircuts are important even when we’re not all wearing face masks, because they get rid of those split ends that can encourage more breakage and make your hair look frizzy, especially if your hair is thick and dry.

Love your accessories. A stylish, color-coordinated scarf or bandana can be a great accessory for thick hair, looking great while getting your hair out of the way of a mask, and letting the rest of your hair flow down the back. With thick hair, you may also need to invest in some heavy-duty bobby pins, which can be strategically placed and hidden under colorful clips to keep your hair in place.
